Numeric pagers could receive nothing but digits, so the 90s invented two workarounds:

Beeper codes were a shared shorthand: some counted letters (143 = "I love you", from the length of each word), some borrowed phone-culture numbers (911 = urgent, 411 = information), and some spelled words upside down (07734 = "hELLO"). Regional dialects existed; friend groups had private codes; misunderstandings were legendary. The table here collects the widely agreed classics.

Calculator words exploit seven-segment displays: flip the calculator and 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 become O I Z E h S g L B G. Type a word, and this tool gives you the digits to enter (the word reversed and mapped); the flipped LCD shows the result exactly as your math teacher confiscated it.
